phonics
I taught my son and daughter to read at the ages of three and four by using phonics. They both became very good readers, and they love reading. I was a special education resource teacher for the first ten years of my teaching career, and except for those students who were not phonetic learners, I taught all of my students to read with phonics.
As a self contained special education teacher, I also used phonics as one of the methods of teaching reading. For those students who did not learn phonetically, I used a multisensory approach which incorporated phonics. I have a Masters Degree in special education. Of my 28 years of teaching, eighteen of those were teaching special education. Because of my training and my experience in teaching phonics, I am requesting certification in that subject area.
special needs
I have a Masters degree in special education (learning disabilities and educably mentally challenged). I taught special education for 19 of my 28 years of teaching. I have taught special education, levels K-12, resource and self-contained models.
Because each student has a different learning style, I used a multisensory approach to educating special students. This approach is beneficial to all types of students because it includes all of the learning modalities.
My greatest joy was watching the self-confidence grow in my special students as they began to see themselves learning, especially in being able to read a book independently, write a short story, and/or add and subtract. I, too, became the student as I found myself learning so much from them.
