I've tutored students for over three years, and I've achieved measurable results. I worked for Extreme Learning which is an organization that helps struggling students pass their STAR exit exams. I achieved an average of 10% improvement on all of my students. I've also tutored students individually in Economics, Political Science, History, Geometry, Algebra, and English.
I have a passion for helping students reach their goals. First, I assess their current situation. Then, I ask what goals have they laid out for themselves. I inquire into what strategies have worked in the past and also which ones haven't worked. I proceed to lay out my lesson ideas and long term strategies. I also ensure that we work in a quiet and uninterrupted area. I clarify the parent's expectations, and let the parents know what I will require of them to maximize the effectiveness of my work.
I also take some time during the first session to lay out the ground rules. I let the student know a little about me, and set expectations for excusing the student. I also encourage the student to ask as many question as he or she needs to. I let them know that more questions will make our sessions the most effective.
I continually emphasize that strong study habits will lead to academic success. I keep them on task by emphasizing their accountability in the learning process. I encourage them with positive comments for their hard work and progress. Finally, I take notes at the end of each session as a tracking tool to gauge their strong points as well as their weaker areas.
