I am an elementary teacher with a Masters degree from the University of Miami in Elementary Ed/ESOL (teaching English as a 2nd language) and a Bachelors degree from Lehigh University. I recently completed the school year in Hilton Head, SC where I taught 2nd grade at a creative arts school. I strongly believe in hands-on learning and engaging my students by providing them with academic experiences they can relate to. When a student finds a personal connection with the material or subject he/she is struggling in, they are active participants in their learning process. Constant encouragement, self reflections, and setting personal goals are essential. I pride myself in creating a positive learning environment where students are comfortable taking risks and knowing that its o.k. to make mistakes and to learn from them. This relationship of mutual respect allows the student to take ownership of their learning and pride in their success.
My classroom is designed to work with students in small rotating groups, of varying abilities. I have a keen understanding of how to modify academic material to all levels by using manipulatives and a variety of reading strategies. This small group or one-on-one interactions have successfully helped all my students reach grade level by the end of the year. My philosophy lies strongly in the belief that taking the time to get to know your students allows you to learn the most about their personal learning styles and how you can best modify your instruction to create the most effective learning environment.
Tutoring Experience: In addition to working with my own students who needed reinforcement, I have tutored 3rd grade math, reading fluency, and writing.
