While tutoring at Old Dominion University I was very successful in working with students who were labeled as learning disabled and getting them through their basic math requirements. My teaching style varies depending on the student’s strengths and weakness. My first step is to asses a student’s strength in the subject matter and level of interest. I have found that most students who are weak in the physical sciences start to improve and develop an interest in the subject when they can relate the subject matter or formulas to some real life phenomena or everyday activities. The best way to get them there is to use the principles or formulas to solve real life problems. As an instructor you have to bring yourself down to the level of the student to be effective and this often requires a lot of patience.
