About Jay

Presently, I am enrolled in a Masters of Arts degree program in Mathematics Education at an online school. When I finish the program, I hope to teach math at the community college level full-time.

Last year, I was contracted as a math teacher with Tierra Encanta Charter High School in Santa Fe where I taught Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. I was given autonomy to design my own curriculum and lesson plans. I would encourage learning and cooperation. During the class period, I would offer help with math and literacy to fit the student's math comprehension. It goes without saying, I also implemented classroom management, and discipline, occasionally. Of course, I was responsible for attendance and grade records, and furthermore, keeping parents appraised of their child's progress.

Prior to this position, I filled a position as a full-time mathematics substitute at Lybrook Elementary K-8 School for one semester. I had most of the same responsibilities with middle school students as I had in the high school. I had recently graduated from the University of New Mexico (UNM) with a MA in Secondary Teacher Education with an endorsement in mathematics without their licensure program. I am presently in an Alternative Teacher Licensure Program at Central New Mexico Community College (CNM).

While I was attending the University of New Mexico (UNM), I tutored a student in Calculus 1. I also was employed as a substitute teacher at Albuquerque Public Schools for 1-1/2 years. While at APS I followed the teacher of record's lesson plans and classroom rules/procedures. I gave instruction and encouraged student's learning and cooperation. Of course, I supplied individual help when I could.

Before I started my education to become a mathematics teacher, I was contracted as a math teacher in December, 2004, at Walatowa High Charter School to teach Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. I taught school and took 2 teacher classes from UNM during the Spring Semester..

In July, 2000, I was employed as a tutor for over a year at a technical college in Kirkland, WA, primarily as a math tutor.

Education:

++ I am attending CNM in an Alternative Teacher Licensure Program. I have been granted a New Mexico Pre-Level 1 Internship License for secondary teachers with an Endorsement in Math in 2008.
++ Also, presently, I am enrolled in a Masters of Arts degree program in Mathematics Education at an online university.
++ I have completed an MA Degree in Secondary Education with a Math Education concentration at UNM in December, 2007.
++ I completed a BA Degree at Seattle Pacific University in General Studies in December, 1997. The General Studies major areas of emphasis were Mathematics, Psychology, and Geography.

  • ASVAB

I am an excellent math tutor for high school math, since I have been teaching math at high schools near Albuquerque. Since the ASVAB has arithmetic, algebra, and geometry topics, I am certain that I will be able to help you prepare for the test. I have a good command of the English language, which is necessary for passing, also, since some of the ASVAB contains vocabulary recognition and reading comprehension. With my ability to explain content and my ability to interest high school students in learning, I would be a great tutor who can prepare you for the exam.
