About Jason

I graduated from high school in 2001 from Tri-Valley School in Healy, Alaska. I then moved to Anchorage, Alaska where I studied all different aspects of Theatre at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. My specialties were Sound Design, Set Design, Drafting, and Construction. There I also began studying music in both Piano and Guitar. In 2008 I moved to Tampa and am a Junior in the process of getting my Audio Engineering Degree from the International Academy of Design and Technology.

My approach to Algebra is to helps students find structure in mathematical equations by showing them that otherwise complex equations can be broken down into much simpler forms and that above all else, Algebra is about balancing an equation.

I am also well trained in Music Theory and can not only simply teach students to read and write musical notation, but also how to take major key signatures and knowledge about the natural intervals and apply them to several different musical techniques. Such as modes and any kind of major, minor, or seventh chord there is.

  • composition (music)

My course work in Music Composition has taught me that songs can be broken down into four different groups. Lyrics, Melody, Harmony, and Form. Each individual part can be developed separately and then brought together to mix into a complete song. Experience as a song writer has taught me several different ways in developing each sections, particularly in the Melody and Harmony sections. In Lyrics, students will learn about destination writing and other methods that get them to think creatively, and also allows them to get those creative ideas down on paper. Students are then taken through the steps that develop that original destination writing into rhyming parts, Internal and External ideas, and finally into full fledged verses. In Melody students will learn about different techniques used to develop their melodies. For example, the usage of motives, musical phrases, and cadences to bring interest to a piece of music. They will also learn about different scales that can be tied to a specific emotion that will allow them to make better decisions when choosing a key to write in. In Harmony, students will learn about chord colors and the emotional connection with each chord. For example a Major chord is considered to sound happy while a minor chord is said to sound sad. This will also tie into teaching students how to make decisions on which key to write in. Students will also learn about harmonic progressions, power progressions, cadences, and modes. The harmony reinforces the overall sound of a song so this should contain as much interest as possible. In Form, students learn about a songs overall structure. Different ways to build up a song that makes sense to the listener and helps keep them interested. This includes verse and chorus relationships and the use of intros, bridges, and pre chorus sections to build up the structure of the song.

  • theatre

My experience in Theatre involves studying at the University of Alaska, Anchorage where I was employed as the Assistant Technical Director and was the Lead Sound Technician as well as Sound Designer. I've worked on several shows including dramas, musicals, and dance genres. My particular specialty is in the design aspects of theatre and just about every technical discipline excluding costume and makeup design. I also have experience at an acting level and can give instruction on character development. In Technical instruction students will learn about the different elements that make up a show. This can be specifically tailored for students interested in Sound Design, Lighting Design, and Set Design. This also also cover drafting techniques and how to make creative choices in the design element of their choice. This is meant to supplement the knowledge a student will gain while enrolled in either a drama or theatre course and provide useful techniques that can be applied to the hands on experience given in the class room. In Character Development students learn how to build a character from scratch. This includes helping students learn what they should take into consideration such as vocal quality and how to project the voice. And emphasis on movement and how different techniques can be used to give different moods and atmosphere that surrounds the character.
