elementary (k-6th)
I am currently a 2nd grade teacher in the New York City Public School system. I have worked with Teacher's College Reading and Writing Project from Columbia University and understand that some students benefit from a more direct approach in boosting their reading and writing skills. I am part of a school-based study in which we reinforce literal and inferential comprehension skills with struggling students in the area of reading. I can also help your child with their writing skills, from getting started with idea planning to more advanced levels. I have graded the NYS ELA exams for grades 3-8 so I know what your child will be held accountable for on those exams. I also have student teaching experience with grades 1 and 5, while I am certified to teach grades 1-6.
I can also pinpoint the specific problem your child is having, whether is be with phonics, reading rate, fluency, decoding/encoding, comprehension and devise a plan to work on those points of struggle in a fun, visual way.
If your child is struggling with math, I take from programs such as Math in the City as well as EveryDay Math to combine discovery learning with skill building in order to create motivation and improve overall performance.
Overall, I love working with elementary students and believe firmly that learning can be exciting and rewarding for both the student and the teacher and such factors are present in my own classroom all year long.
