About Howard

I received my B.S. in Accounting and have vast experience in Business, including substitute teaching at a college, having my own accounting firm (specialized in taxation), as well as more than 20 years in both private and governmental accounting. Since graduation, I have achieved several post-graduate certifications, which are all current. In addition, I have had continuing education classes that have enabled me to stay abreast of current issues and problems. I am well-versed, not only in accounting, but in mathematics and other subjects as well.

I tutored my three daughters through school (all of whom have now received at least a bachelor's degree). In addition I have worked with other middle school and high school students to help them better understood algebra, science and mathematics. In addition, I teach Bible classes as well as finance classes at Calvary Baptist Church in Pensacola. These classes include teenagers from 14 years of age to persons in their late 50's and 60's. Many folks have made life-changing decisions in the area of personal finance. Several have been able to get completely out of debt or are currently working through a plan to do so.

In addition, I played softball for several years (primarily as a pitcher, but also at third base and in left field). Then I "graduated" to coaching softball.

I like to see students progress and I especially enjoy working with them and watching them arrive at an "ah ha!" moment when they finally grasp an idea or principle that has eluded them. I am patient, but I like to see results and improvement. I am flexible and will be glad to discuss how I can help you do well in school and hopefully in life, as well.

More On Howard's Subjects

  • Bible studies

I have formally studied Greek and taken Bible courses for many years. Since college I have been privileged to continue learning from some of the best via books. I currently have a large library and also utilize the Logos Bible Software, which allows the user to dig deeply into the original languages and understand not only the words spoken, but the persons to whom the letters/books were originally written. In addition, I have taught Bible classes in formal and informal sessions for more than 20 years. Although much of the teaching has been primarily verse-by-verse (expository), most of the lessons have been very interactive with the students. I believe that the Bible is God's Word and is inerrant and trustworthy. As such, He has given it to us so we can know and become more like Him (Philippians 3:10). Although only God knows His Word thoroughly, He has provided it so we can glean gems from it in order that we can understand and apply it as we serve Him. Come delve into the Word with me!

  • business

After graduation from college (the University of Tennessee) with a B.S. in Accounting, I have served in various industries as an Accountant, Financial Manager, Accounting Manager, Controller, Treasurer, and Business Owner. This vast experience, along with my years of working with non-profit entities, has enabled me to gain much experience and knowledge in business. I have been able to perform analyses and make recommendations and decisions which have enabled firms to either avoid financial problems or to greatly improve their financial results. I have received several letters of recognition and commendations for my efforts from various people: supervisors, top management and peers alike. I have excellent communication skills. Let me help you!

  • elementary (k-6th)

Since graduating from college with a B.S. in Accounting, I have been very successful, not only as an accountant, but also in raising and teaching three daughters (each of whom I spent many hours with, especially during their elementary years as they learned and studied the core subjects -- reading, mathematics, phonics, science, spelling, and writing). During their early years, we stressed discipline and learning how to study so they could achieve their goals. All three have since graduated from college and are very successful in life, so our attention to details worked very well. As a manager I have had the privilege to interview many folks and I have found that too many of them are not skilled in the basic subjects. I would like to help change that trend. I have excellent rapport with children and am very patient and able to encourage them so that they often desire to learn, even when it is difficult. Let's work together to help your child grow!

  • softball

I have participated in softball for more than 10 years as a player and a coach. Although I have played all positions, my primary ones are pitching, third base and left field. I have pitched for the bulk of my career. I have assisted and coached teams for several years and thoroughly enjoy watching the players learn to play better. My primary objective is to instruct so that the fundamental skills are learned and subsequently improved. However, I am also very interested in teaching so that the students learn to apply their good work ethic in other areas of life, too.
