About Tracey

After graduating from Adelphi University with a Masters in TESOL and obtaining my New York State Initial Certification in TESOL, I held two ESL leave replacement positions. I was an ESL teacher in the Garden City Park School where I had the opportunity to work with students in Kindergarten through third grade. I also held a two-month ESL leave replacement position at Islip High School during which time I provided push-in and pull-out instruction. In addition, last summer I was a summer school ESL teacher in East Meadow School District.
I offer the students a rich language based environment where they can make progress in their listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. I incorporate literacy, grammar and writing into my lessons. I also include speaking activities and conversational practice into the lessons. My lessons are very visual and picture based as well as hands on. I also enjoy including technology in my lessons but making use of the Internet and all of the great resources available.
I incorporate literacy, grammar and writing into my lessons. Recently during poetry month I found a poem on snails that lended itself to reinforcing rhyming skills. I selected the poem because it was also our school’s science fair and that class had been studying snails. I believe it is important to offer students reading that applies to what they are covering in the classroom. This helps them build vocabulary and language in the content areas. It also allows the students to feel comfortable and familiar with the materials. Through out my days I implement shared, guided and independent reading. I also use read a louds very often to teach skills. With younger students I do a lot of alphabet and phonics work. I use various approaches such as making baggies for each letter, making mini books on each letter, making posters, and going on scavenger hunts. I also work on literacy skills such as pointing to each word, using the pictures to help them with unknown/tricky words, and sounding out/stretching words. I believe my experiences, education and creative approach will enable me to engage your child in learning and motivate him/her to succeed and progress.

More On Tracey's Subjects

  • ESL/ESOL

I like to make learning fun and interesting for my students. I motivate students by starting lessons with something interesting or a mystery. In one of my lessons I gave my students three clues and they had to figure out our topic of the day. I incorporate literacy, grammar and writing into my lessons. Recently during poetry month I found a poem on snails and then we learned about rhyming. After we learned about rhyming my students wrote another verse for the poem and we wrote it out on chart paper. I feel it is very important to review vocabulary and key terms you need to know in order to fully understand what you are reading. Yes it is important to be a good reader but good readers also have to understand what they are reading. I also include speaking activities in my lessons. I have a game I play with students where each player has a card and we read off clues until we find the last card. So you also have to be a good listener to play. You might have to listen for compound words or contractions and figure out the clues. I also enjoy playing charades with my students to review verbs and other grammar skills. My lessons have a lot of pictures and I try to make them as fun as possible while we are learning and practicing our skills.

  • phonics

Working on phonics can be very fun! I enjoy working with students on their phonics work. I try to make it as fun as possible and use hands on activities. I use flashcards and memory games a lot. I try to match sounds and words with pictures. The pictures will help you to really remember the words and sounds. I like cutting up words and sentences and having the student put them back together. We can play sorting games where you can decide which words/pictures belong where. For example we can play trying to sort long and short vowels sounds. We can also make minibooks or do a craft to help you learn. For example we can make a minibook on words that start with bl or fl.

  • study skills

Study skills are very important and help students achieve success in school. One important part of study skills is being organized. I am a very organized person and would help you become more organized with your work and assignments. After you get organized I can help you figure out a 'to do' list. This will help you to see what you need to get done and when they need to be done by. I will also show you different ways to learn your material. I can show you how highlighting, making outlines and making flashcards can really help you learn the information. Sometimes simply re-writing your notes or explaining to someone and having a talk about it can make the information seem more real. When the information is real it will be easier for you to remember and understand.
