About Sherri

I have a Bachelors of Art in Elementary Education from Purdue and a Masters of Science in Education in the field of special education from Illinois State. I hold teaching certificates in elementary education and special education in the areas of mildly mentally handicapped, learning disabilities, and behavior disorders. I taught special education in both a self-contained classroom and a departmentalized classroom in a public high school for 6 years.
I have taught GED and Adult Basic Reading classes for 19 years through a community college program. In this program, I have worked with students in math, writing, grammar, literature, science, and social studies to improve their skills to pass the test to earn a certificate similar to a high school diploma. I teach an individualized program, adapting the lessons to each of my students own personal needs. Many of my students have enrolled in college classes once earning their GED. I enjoy working with the students and helping them reach their goals to a more positive future.
I have a lot of patience when working with my students to help them learn difficult material. I also help students develop better concentration skills and encourage them to learn to focus on their work for longer periods of time by taking small steps to reach this. I have a good sense of humor when working with students. Most of all, I enjoy teaching and helping others learn.

More On Sherri's Subjects

  • elementary (k-6th)

I have my undergraduate degree in elementary education. While studying to earn my degree, I worked with students in a small group to improve reading skills and vocabulary. I also participated as a classroom assistant in a first grade. I student taught also in a first grade classroom. When my children were in elementary school, I volunteered in their school. I worked with students on math skills, reading subjects, and art projects. I also worked in the library, helping students with research topics, reading book selections, and computer assignments. I also worked a group of fourth grade gifted students one year, meeting with the students for several weeks. I especially enjoy working with students on math skills, encouraging them to learn their basic math facts and instructing them in other math areas.

  • special needs

I have worked with developmentally delayed students and mildly mentally handicapped students in high school. I taught them basic school subjects and also worked with them on basic cooking skills and life skills. I have also worked with more impaired students in an adult reading program, helping them improve basic vocabulary skills to read directions, labels, and other everyday materials they encounter. I have also worked with students with learning disabilities in high school and in the GED program I teach. I have encouraged them to try different ways to improve their skills in reading, writing, and doing math. I also work often with my students to improve their concentration skills, so that they can stay focused on materials for longer periods of time. I am willing to adapt my teaching style to best fit what works with each of my students, and I try explaining how to do things in more than one way if students do not understand. I am very aware that all students learn differently, and what works with one student does not necessarily work with another. Therefore, I try different ways to find what works best with each student.
