I have a Bachelors of Art in Elementary Education from Purdue and a Masters of Science in Education in the field of special education from Illinois State. I hold teaching certificates in elementary education and special education in the areas of mildly mentally handicapped, learning disabilities, and behavior disorders. I taught special education in both a self-contained classroom and a departmentalized classroom in a public high school for 6 years.
I have taught GED and Adult Basic Reading classes for 19 years through a community college program. In this program, I have worked with students in math, writing, grammar, literature, science, and social studies to improve their skills to pass the test to earn a certificate similar to a high school diploma. I teach an individualized program, adapting the lessons to each of my students own personal needs. Many of my students have enrolled in college classes once earning their GED. I enjoy working with the students and helping them reach their goals to a more positive future.
I have a lot of patience when working with my students to help them learn difficult material. I also help students develop better concentration skills and encourage them to learn to focus on their work for longer periods of time by taking small steps to reach this. I have a good sense of humor when working with students. Most of all, I enjoy teaching and helping others learn.
