About Sharon

People have always guessed that I was a teacher as if I had it emblazoned on my forehead! In fact, as a child I was the neighborhood teacher conducting class in our garage. In college I wanted to teach French and English. Actually I wanted to know French so well that I could teach English in France. Well, after 6 years of French that never materialized as I got married before I graduated and didn't get to France until about 30 yrs later. Amazing how I could still carry on a conversation in French after all that time!! I truly love the language!

I also love the English language - writing, grammar, spelling, editing, teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), geography, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology. My ancient BA degree is in Sociology.

As a Social Security Adjudicator I combined my passion for health and helping people. I had 5 yrs of training by our medical staff covering all body systems. I used this knowledge to ace a Medical Terminology college course several years later. After working as a workers compensation adjuster for many years I left corporate health to start my own business as a licensed massage therapist at the age of 48. I loved the core anatomy and physiology courses!! I and one other person tied for the top of our class graduating finals!

My bodywork practice led me to seek nutritional training which I have done mainly on-line for the last 10 yrs. I have taken classes through the American Nutraceutical Association, Proevity, and the American International Association of Nutritional Education. I taught wellness and basic nutrition one-on-one for many years before I retired three years ago. Im now a young 62 and dearly miss the one-on-one teaching environment. This year I started volunteering as an ESL teacher with local refugees. As a volunteer I also tutor adults who have never learned to read through the Drake University Adult Literacy Center.

I guess the only thing I havent mentioned is Geography. This is simply another love of mine from childhood when I learned to identify all the states by their shapes and their capitols! I still love geography and would love to revisit it through tutoring!

A little about me personally. I am friendly with an easy smile, caring, sincere, inspiring, and a good listener. Energetic, patient, thorough, detail-oriented, dedicated, focused, organized, reliable, and competent. The contribution I can make in helping others is what both drives me and nourishes my soul!

Hi, I am a young 62 yr old who loves to teach! I taught one-on-one for the last 13 yrs in my business, am now retired, but still have a lot of energy to contribute! I love languages, learning about different cultures, and am fairly fluent in French. I admire foreigners who speak multiple languages and would love to teach you English! I have been volunteer teaching ESL here in Des Moines through the Lutheran Services of Iowa's Refuge Center since March 2008, 4-6 hrs/wk. I have experienced the joy of teaching ESL to students from all over the world - many from Africa and Asia. In the last 2 months I added 2 wonderful Vietnamese students, aged 17 and 21, through WyzAnt, teaching them in their home twice a week. My experience ranges from teaching those who have been in the country 2 wks, illiterate in their own native language and starting with the alphabet to teaching those who have been here 5 yrs and learned English in their home country before coming to the US. I have been involved in other aspects of helping refuges get resettled beyond teaching ESL as well - transportation, housing, clothing, food, healthcare, schooling, budgeting, etc. Learning English - speaking, reading, and writing - however, is a primary need for everyone to move towards independence in all of these areas and towards citizenship if that is a goal. I have also been volunteer teaching English one-on-one through the Drake Adult Literacy Center since March 2008. These are adult students who have struggled with reading throughout their lives. Drake uses a very successful systematic method of learning English that builds mastery in one area before going on to the next. I continue to receive on-going training through Drake that involves learning how to work through learning challenges such as emotional life issues, crises, and low self-image, which impedes learning progress for everyone, including those learning ESL. My students tell me that I am reliable, understanding, patient, inspiring, and actually make learning fun! I hope youll give me the opportunity to teach you ESL through WyzAnt! Sincerely, Sharon J
