People have always guessed that I was a teacher as if I had it emblazoned on my forehead! In fact, as a child I was the neighborhood teacher conducting class in our garage. In college I wanted to teach French and English. Actually I wanted to know French so well that I could teach English in France. Well, after 6 years of French that never materialized as I got married before I graduated and didn't get to France until about 30 yrs later. Amazing how I could still carry on a conversation in French after all that time!! I truly love the language!
I also love the English language - writing, grammar, spelling, editing, teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), geography, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology. My ancient BA degree is in Sociology.
As a Social Security Adjudicator I combined my passion for health and helping people. I had 5 yrs of training by our medical staff covering all body systems. I used this knowledge to ace a Medical Terminology college course several years later. After working as a workers compensation adjuster for many years I left corporate health to start my own business as a licensed massage therapist at the age of 48. I loved the core anatomy and physiology courses!! I and one other person tied for the top of our class graduating finals!
My bodywork practice led me to seek nutritional training which I have done mainly on-line for the last 10 yrs. I have taken classes through the American Nutraceutical Association, Proevity, and the American International Association of Nutritional Education. I taught wellness and basic nutrition one-on-one for many years before I retired three years ago. Im now a young 62 and dearly miss the one-on-one teaching environment. This year I started volunteering as an ESL teacher with local refugees. As a volunteer I also tutor adults who have never learned to read through the Drake University Adult Literacy Center.
I guess the only thing I havent mentioned is Geography. This is simply another love of mine from childhood when I learned to identify all the states by their shapes and their capitols! I still love geography and would love to revisit it through tutoring!
A little about me personally. I am friendly with an easy smile, caring, sincere, inspiring, and a good listener. Energetic, patient, thorough, detail-oriented, dedicated, focused, organized, reliable, and competent. The contribution I can make in helping others is what both drives me and nourishes my soul!
