Thomas's Experience:
ESL/ESOL
|
I have taught English as a Second Language at many adult education programs throughout the state of Rhode Island. In total, I have been teaching ESL for five years and have developed a track record with both students and adult education programs, i.e., many people, students and teachers, know me and my teaching ability.
I know the methodologies and tricks of the trade, so to speak, in teaching ESL students.
I believe this eminently qualifies me to tutor ESL students.

general computer
|
I have taught computer skills--Word, Excel, Internet, and Outlook--to adults, both American and immigrant adults, throughout the state of Rhode Island. I've been at my current computer teaching job for five years. It involves teaching clients on workman's compensation the computer skills they need for an office, as they cannot return to physical work. Many of these students have only a high school education.
Before this, I worked in desktop publishing and also taught Introduction to Computers, the basics, to people.
I believe this qualifies me to tutor students in general computer skills, as many of my current students know absolutely nothing about the computer. I have to get them up to speed in three weeks and have been successful doing it.

grammar
|
I studied grammar in high school and college then applied what I learned in the publishing field when editing and proofreading. In addition, I've taught freshman composition at the college level where I had to teach a grammar component. In the past five years, I've taught grammar in an English as a Second Language setting to immigrant students.
I believe this makes me qualified to tutor in grammar. Most of my students are a little bit above high school age.
|
proofreading
|
I majored in English in college, worked in publishing for twelve years, and then started teaching writing and ESL. In each capacity, I've had to utilize my proofreading skills. In addition to me doing the proofreading, I've gotten my students to proofread and correct their own work (even when typing a document on the computer).
Given this, I believe that I have the experience to tutor someone in proofreading.
