About Katherine:

Hello! My name is Katherine and I have been an elementary teacher for the last eight yrs., but have worked with children in various settings for the last 13 yrs. I have tutored for the last two yrs. in all elementary subjects and special projects (science projects, speeches etc.) I graduated from the University of Nebraska in Omaha in 2000 with a BS in Elementary Education and a specialization in Reading. Since 2000, I have taught ESL, Prekindergarten, kindergarten, first grade, and 2nd grade. Because all children learn differently, I believe in a multi-sensory learning approach. I also believe a child needs 100% praise in all they do because if he/she does not feel good about hisself/herself learning is not as enjoyable. I create a safe, respectful, and fun learning environment for every child I teach! I love the outdoors, music, learning about different cultures, and spending time with my puppy!

More On Katherine's Subjects:

  • drawing

In my 31 years of life, art has always been a passion of mine. I have taken many classes which include; life drawing, oil painting, art for elementary teachers, and art classes in my high school years. I have always had a "out of the box" creativity in my lessons as a teacher, which in turn allowed the students to show their individualism and creativity as well. I believe that drawing and painting is all about the shapes or outlined shape you see. I have always chosen to teach my students how to draw flat shapes, as well as, three dimensional shapes in a way that is fun and allows them to recognize shapes in the "outside world". Art is a passion of mine and I believe promotes creativity, individualism, and open minded view in life.

  • elementary (k-6th)

I have been an elementary teacher for the last eight yrs. I have a certified license in Elementary Education with a specilization in Reading. At some point in my life, I have taught all grades kindergarten through sixth grade. Whether in field experience or a teaching position, I hold many years of experience under my belt. I also am qualified to teach any subject in an elementary curriculum.

  • grammar

I feel very confident in my grammar. I taught first and second grade where learning grammar is brand new. These students excelled in writing and knowing when to use commas, quotation marks, and so on. I also have many activities to use to teach this subject.

  • phonics

I have taught phonics for the last 7 years while I taught first grade. I have also taught phonemes, which is vowel sounds as well as vowel combinations. First grade is very close to the base of where learning letter sounds and combining them to create words begins. I have taught letter sounds, blends, diagraphs, word families, and ending blends and diagraphs. I have taught this in many ways, such as through listening to the sounds then writing what the student hears. Also with sutdents matching words that have the same word families. I have many different activities for phonics and feel very qualified and confident to teach this subject.

  • tennis

I have played tennis for 10 years, including all 4 years of high school. I have also had the opportunity to help teach kids tennis in my community while I was in college. I have a love for it and because of that love, I would love to teach it!
