I am a 30 year veteran of public education and an experienced teacher. I've been an elementary school principal and a special education teacher and administrator. I have an EdD in educational leadership/higher education/curriculum and instruction. I work well with students of all ages. My teaching style is focused on a model of success, using students' strengths to achieve rather than focusing on students' weaknesses. I will form a student/tutor relationship that allows us to communicate openly about what works and doesn't work in terms of student learning.
Primarily, I believe education is about the student. It involves providing a learning environment that is conducive to student learning. This means relationship building and/or presenting a setting where students are encouraged to take risks in their learning, to ask questions, to offer ideas, and to communicate openly with their peers. The teacher is not “the sage on the stage”; in fact the teacher will discover and learn as well according to students’ experiences.
Teaching is my life-long career and I love what I do. My experience demonstrates that students don’t need to be “filled up” with information; rather they need to learn how to discover, what questions to ask, and what are the resources available. Then the students need time and support to practice the theories or ideas they develop, with the supervision of an experienced educator. The students have to be able to work collaboratively with many people, including parents, peers, and community members, to name a few. It is my responsibility as the teacher to ensure students’ learning with high expectations, clear guidance, and ongoing support.
Excellent teachers are essential to the learning process. Every student needs access to the dedicated and highly skilled teacher. This teacher is current in the areas of pedagogy and reads professional articles and journals on an ongoing basis. He/she isn’t afraid to take a risk to provide students with meaningful experiences. This teacher will have a clear objective in every lesson he/she plans and implements. The teacher will always know the students and what they need and will select content and activities that are relevant to students’ interests and needs. Making these “real life” connections is critical if learners are to internalize and relate personally to learning experiences.
I also believe teachers need to recognize a variety of learning styles and abilities. It is up to the teacher to offer a variety of approaches in terms of the learning process, the end product, and particular strategies for learning. I think a teacher needs to keep the philosophy of teaching foremost in his/her mind and to always self-checking to see if the philosophy is evident in the learning environment. How I operationalize the philosophy is key and the source for my own growth objectives as a professional.
