About Bernadette

I have sung with the New York City Opera since 1991. I have extensive experience in oratorio and chamber music and have performed with Artek, Musical Chairs, the West Village Chorale, the Taghkanic Chorale, and with Florilegium in Mendelssohn’s Elijah. As a returning artist with the New York Repertory Orchestra. I have done several recitals at venues such as the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace, the Donnell Library, the Episcopal Actors’ Guild where she is a member, and Midday Concerts at the Church of the Transfiguration. I was also a featured soloist, actor and Foley artist with the award-winning Quicksilver Radio Theater. Recently, in Venice, Italy she performed as soloist in Mozart’s Mass in C Minor at the Chiesa di San Stefano with the New York Choral Society.
I teach voice privately, and have done team-coaching for singers/actors with my actor husband.

I have a great ear for language and accents. I was recently certified as an ESL teacher (CELTA) from Cambridge University and taught in an English language school in New York City, both classes and privately.

I can combine music and English lessons if that suits your needs as well.

I think I can fairly say that I have a good ear for language. I have been a professional singer for many years and am now a certified (CELTA) ESL teacher as well. I have been singing with New York City opera since 1991. I have studied several languages, including French, Spanish, and German, and have sung in many others, including Italian, Russian, Czech, Latin and Greek. I also teach voice privately and have done several master classes. Last summer I took a month-long ESL course at the Teaching House at St. John's University in Manhattan at the end of which I received a certificate in ESL from Cambridge University (CELTA). In this course I taught pre-intermediate and upper-intermediate multilingual classes, ranging from 7-10 students. I also had six hours of observed and actual teaching practice. There were written assignments, including a case study and needs analysis, as well as designing tasks for practicing receptive and productive skills. I was rated above standard in setting up whole class and/or group individual activities appropriate to lessons and establishing good rapport with learners. After graduating from this course I almost immediately started teaching at Language Studies International in Manhattan, where I had a class of 14 intermediate students from around the world. At LSI I also taught private students ranging from pre-intermediate to advanced levels. I think it would be fun to combine singing and English lessons for those students who are intereted in both. This could be done easily using vocal warm-ups as practice for clear vowel sounds and then concentrating on pronunciation and interpretation of poetry in songs.

  • voice (music)

I was born and bred in Brooklyn, New York and got my Masters Degree from the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music, although I now reside in Manhattan. I have been singing with the New York City Opera Chorus since 1991, and have also performed several small roles there. I have a long history of professional choral singing in New York City and have sung with groups including the New York Choral Artists, Holy Trinity Bach Vespers Choir, the New York Virtuoso Singers, Musica Sacra and Ascension Voices. I also have extensive solo and choral experience in oratorio and chamber music and have performed with Artek, Amor Artis, Musical Chairs, the West Village Chorale, the Taghkanic Chorale, Florilegium, and the Sine Nomine Singers. I have done several solo recitals at the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace, the Donnell Library, the Episcopal Actors’ Guild where I am also a member, and Midday Concerts at the Church of the Transfiguration. With my husband’s award-winning Quicksilver Radio Theater, I have been a featured soloist, actor and sound effects artist. I have been teaching voice privately for over 20 years, and have done team-coaching for singers/actors with my husband. I have also taught at the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music Preparatory Division, where I had young students, ages 12-16. There I did private lessons, voice classes and prepared students for recitals. My forte lies in teaching first-time students, but I have also taught more advanced singers as well. A typical lesson consists of 15-20 minutes of warm-up exercises and 30-40 minutes working on songs. Although I am classically trained and have an extensive knowledge of classical repertoire, I welcome other styles of music as well in my lessons. I am also a certified (CELTA) English as a Second Language teacher and would love to have students who wanted to combine both singing and learning English. I think that using clear English vowel and consonant sounds while singing can really be beneficial to someone who needs help in this area, since the sounds in singing are exaggerated compared to those in normal speech and, therefore, much easier to recognize.
