About Peter

Hello! Servus! Moi! Bonjour! Zdravo!

My name is Peter S. and I am originally from the Detroit area. I am currently enrolled as a master's student in sports and exercise psychology at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. I am in my second semester of four and have just recently begun researching for my thesis which will involve team cohesion amongst adolescent boys in soccer. My academic history involves a BA in biology from Kalamazoo College with German and psychology minors. In addition, I studied abroad for a semester in Bonn, Germany as well as completed my own thesis, which involved the amount of light reflection from birds' eggs as they relate to the order in which they were laid in the clutch.

For the past two years I have lived in Europe, both in Germany and Finland. I have a great deal of international experience, having been to three continents, and have worked and studied in three countries. Before coming to Finland, I had returned to the University of Bonn, where I completed my study abroad, to tutor international students in German for a full academic year. During this stretch I also audited courses in both neurobiology and psychology. In addition, I have continued to play soccer, as I have since I was four. I competed in Germany as well as up until the collegiate level back in the USA, and the sport is currently the main focus of mine for my master's thesis and will continue to be once I begin my doctorate work.

In summary, I tend to be very easy going and find studying conditions best over a tea or coffee with a great conversation, as discussion provokes the best thought and learning atmosphere. On the soccer pitch I prefer working on skill and seeing effort rather than perfect results. I am very demanding but highly supportive, and will help you to establish and reach your goals, as I know how important my goals are to me. I will be in the Columbus area from mid-May until the beginning of September, and do not plan on taking much vacation time during this period.

Therefore, please contact me as soon as possible if you have any interest in being tutored in the areas of German and / or biology. I also will be happy to assist in the writing of lab reports and German language papers. Once I know the level, we can assess together where we are and where we need to be. In the realm of soccer, please give me whatever information you feel is necessary, and I will be more than happy to hone your skills and optimize your performance out on the pitch.

Thank you and hope to hear from you!

I have had a ball at my feet within the first few months after I started walking. I was the youngest of three boys, all soccer players, and because the game was already constantly in my parents lives, I took to it almost all too naturally. I grew up playing in the backyard against my old, bigger brothers, and at the age of four joined my first team. Back then it was called "zone" soccer, as to not let the kids just run all around the field. We went undefeated for two straight years. More importantly, I kept up playing and training, going to soccer camps every Summer and staying in love with the sport. I remember going to World Cup games in '94, watching Romania vs. Switzerland, and thinking this was truly the greatest sport on the planet. I captained my club team as well as my high school one, and continue to play in college as both a defender and an outside midfielder. I would describe myself as a agreesive defender, always ready to jump up in the attack, but smart enough to know when to stay back. I have been highly trained in ball skills, but my specialty was always place kicking, as I took many of the free-kicks for my team. I even have had speed and agility training, and would be happy to pass along those skills to my pupil to develop overall speed and quickness. For the past couple years I have lived in both Germany and Finland, where the game is played very differently. I have learned here the high skilled and quick paced game, where the focus is not on physical presence, but game-awareness. This, compiled with my master's degree in sports and exercise psychology, can help my pupil to optimize his or her performance and give him or her the best chance at developing into a great player. I would personally work most comfortably with 10-18 year olds of either sex, and am more than willing to give all I can, as long as my pupil is.
