I am currently a third year medical student looking for opportunities to help elementary and high students achieve in mathematics. I know math can be frustrating and hope to teach students strategies to tackle math's inevitable challenges and gain confidence for academic hurdles like homework and tests.
My educational background is somewhat non-traditional. I received a bachelor's degree from University of Wisconsin - Madison, where I majored in Mathematics and History. I did several research projects in linear algebra, with some work in computational mathematics. After UW-Madison, I attended Goucher College where I participated in a post-baccalaureate premedical program, taking science courses as well as the MCAT. The following year, I worked at Georgetown University, on a cancer research project. I've been in Rochester attending University of Rochester's School of Medicine and Dentistry since August 2006.
In addition to an undergraduate degree in mathematics, I have had a variety of tutoring experiences. While attending UW-Madison, I tutored freshman students in algebra, worked at Kaplan as a private SAT/ACT tutor and an ACT course teacher, and tutored a first grader in addition, subtraction and reading. Additionally, I co-taught a sixth grade summer school math course to underachieving students in the Madison City School District. I tutored weekly in Washington, D.C. via a Horton's Kids, an organization that paired tutors with students attending some of D.C.'s lowest-performing schools. Since living in Rochester, I have tutored via a medical student organization that visits students at Rochester City School Number 7 on Saturday mornings.
Now that most of my free time is used to read medical science, I miss the unique experience I had studying math in the past and believe tutoring math will give me that opportunity, while helping other students achieve.
