I am a full-time teacher who also enjoys tutoring students. A career switcher with 20 years of experience in business and information systems management, I became a teacher 10 years ago. I am certified in the State of Virginia to teach K-12 in the subject area of Business and Information Technology. I taught a variety of information technology courses, including Web Design and International Business and Marketing, at the high school level for 3 years and currently teach computer applications to 7th grade students. Since moving to the middle school level 5 years ago, I have worked each year in our after school remediation program working with small groups of 6th or 7th graders in math and reading remediation. Before teaching high school I worked one year a a middle school running a computer based reading and math remediation program for 6-8th grade students. I have also worked part-time at a local tutoring center with 1st through 12th grade students in reading and math instruction and SAT preparation for the reading and writing portions of the test. During the 2008/09 school year I provided homebound instruction to a 6th grade student and an 8th grade student in all core subject areas.

I love individual and small-group tutoring and remedial instruction. Most students involved in tutoring have experienced a fair amount of educational frustration. I work hard to make tutoring a positive experience, and one that adapts to the individual needs and learning preferences of the students with whom I work.

  I currently teach at the 7th grade level in the public school system in Virginia and have worked as an after school remediation instructor for 5 years at the 6th and 7th grade levels for reading and math. I have also worked as a tutor for a tutoring center with clients in grades 1-12. I have experience in reading instruction from 1st grade to high school level, both in decoding and reading comprehension. I have experience in math instruction from 1st grade through the Algebra I level. I am very familiar with the Virginia Standards of Learning for reading and math at these levels. I am also quite proficient in identifying and utilizing Internet resources to aid with instruction.
