More On Fredric's Subjects:

  • photography

I have been involved in photography for over 35 years. I have studied photography professionally and on my own since 1970. I use all formats of cameras and film as well as digital. I sell my fine art images in art fairs and galleries throughout the midwest. Fred Ullrich has worked professionally in visual communications for almost 30 years, in photography and filmmaking, and he continues to define his personal vision through his black and white hand crafted photographs. He maintains a fine art photographic presence through periodic art exhibitions and juried art shows in the Midwest and on his web site www.fredullrich.com. Large Format photography Over the last thirteen years, he has been developing a project-based series of images while using large format photography and traditional wet chemistry print making techniques. His subject matter ranges from landscape to architecture to urban form and activity. The fine detail and rich tonal values of fiber base black and white prints help achieve his photographic objective of translating genuine and common objects into rhythmic two-dimensional expressions. All of Fred’s prints are printed and matted on archival and acid free (museum standard) materials. Prints are toned with selenium or sepia for permanence. Pyro film development Recently, Fred has begun to work with pyro (pyrogallol) film developer, which was used by Adams, Weston, Strand and others. Pyro, which remains a revered art tool despite its absence from commercial use: is the oldest developer of silver photographic plates. provides a definite increase in both printing quality and its capacity to record subtle differences of light. Education and family Fred has studied fine art photography at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona and at the Center of the Eye Photography School in Aspen, Colorado. He has participated in several fine art photographic workshops in the New England area and has presented fine art photographic workshops in the Midwest. Fred holds a Masters of Science in Education from Northern Illinois University, Dekalb, Illinois. A mid-westerner most of his life, Fred lives in Geneva, Illinois with his wife. His two children live in New York and attended Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Fred teaches fine art photography courses using his own darkroom and studio.
