About RUTH:

Hello, my name is Ruth and I always had been interested in working with children and one of the things I've done is worked with the neighborhood kids and helped them out with their schoolwork. I thought why not take the next best thing and put this into good use, and tutor children and adults.

I'm also a flute player and I would love to teach flute to beginnings and intermediate students. The reason for that so I can teach them the basics and to properly play at the very beginning.

My main interest are: flute, ESL, study skills, business, and elementary. I just want to teach students the basics and when they reach their advanced studies; the student can utilize a tutor who specializes in that subject.

I'm very dependable, friendly and my main goal is to make learning fun and yet they will remember what they learn as well.

More On RUTH's Subjects:

  • business

I am interested in helping students with business because I received my MBA with a concentration in marketing. I like to help students with the general aspect of business and also to offer what I do on a daily basis working in a business as well.

  • elementary (k-6th)

I love working with small children and to me, I love seeing how they learn and the fact, they are like little sponges as they learn a new subject. I also enjoy working with small children because it is easier to work with general subjects rather than the technical subjects, such as caluclus or chemistry. My goal when I am working with a student is to help them learn to good study habits and ways to become organize with their homework, papers and study skills.

  • ESL/ESOL

I am interested in helping those who has English as a second language. I know they often become frustrated and they feel no one understands them or vice versa. I would like to help a student learn the basics of English and the meanings of words. I also want to help students write as well. Quite often ESL students have a hard time adjusting too the difference of talking and writing. This also leads a higher level of frustration and in turn, don't want to learn English and they revert back to their native language. I want to help ESL students that learning English is fun and it can be done. I interact with many foreigners on a daily basis and I do find myself that I have to explain what these words mean and I said yes, it is confusing because they are two meanings for this word. My background in teaching ESL is explaining to foreigners the different meanings of words and why we have this meaning and the reason we have this rule. I also explain to them the parts of speech in a sentence. My goal is for ESL students is to make learning fun, easy and not to get intimidated by the different rulings of the English language, but to understand the reason. The key is to make it easy and simple.

  • flute

I am a flute player. I've been playing since I was 10 years old and I played in numerous bands and concerts. I also know all the mechnics to the flute and able to sight read very well. I've studied under Deborah Hendrickson-Ridgewood, NJ for 4 years in H.S. I prefer to teach beginners and intermediate students, because I want to just teach at the basic level. My goal is to teach students the general basics. I also want my student to learn how to play properly and teach them time managment skills by learning how to utilize their practice time and adjusting with their school work as well. I played in marching, concert band all throughout high school. Played in summer and high school theatre productions. Recently, I am playing in ground ceremony for All-Saints church in Manassas. I do expect my students to buy their own books/music stands and own material for their instrument. I will give them the name of the book and they can buy them at the local music shop or they can go on-line if they like. My lessons will generally be half an hour. If a junior or high school student is auditioning for all-state, regionals or for chair, I will make the lessons an hour or more if they request it, but I prefer to make them a half hour to 45 mins. I also want my students to have fun, enjoy their lessons and their instrument too. I dont want my students to be unhappy with their instrument or practicing. I will give my students my cell phone number if they have a question or if they cannot make their lesson. The key to playing is to have fun/enjoy music too.

  • study skills

I am very interested in helping students develop better study skills. It is often when a student has poor study skills, they tend to get frustrated and lost, in turn, they lose interest in doing school altogether. I want to show a student, learning and developing good study skills can be fun, and they can learn to be organized by keeping a good system and remaining consistent. I want to make the student to feel happy, proud and good about themselves and if I can make a student feel good, they in turn will have better results and they develop better study skills. I love working with children and I do enjoy working with adults too. I think if you are positive about what you are going to do, the student will respond to that. My goal is to show that it can be done.
