My name is Phyllis. I am a certified educator. I have a Batchelor of Arts Degree in Art and Education. My Masters is in Adult Education. Beyond that I have many hours in reading and was temporarily certified to teach reading and Learning Disabilities. In addition I have taken coursework in general computers and Microsoft.
My teaching experience has been varied. I taught reading to elementary through Middle School. This included teaching phonics as well as reading for content.
I Chaired the Middlel School Reading and Computer Departments in a large inter-city school. After this I taught beginning computers at several area Community colleges.
My experience has also included teaching the Learning Disabled within the general classroom population as well as in isolation.
During my time teaching computers to elementary
students, I was awarded several teacher of the year awards for my Planet Banneker Program.
This program was done in connection with High
School vocational programs. The program helped students prepare for highschool as it not only included computer programming, but, a good deal of report writing and science.
I have done tutoring off and on throughout my
teaching career and have found it very rewarding. Subjects in which I have tutored include reading, elementary math, and computers.
As an instructor, I am relaxed and fairly informal. My goal is to get the job done, but, enjoy it too. Activities are geared to meet whatever goals are set. Goals and activities are set by age and ability.
Generally assessment will be done in the beginning sessions if the students haven't
any scores or information to work with from other resources. Some assessment will be formal, some informal. This will help in goal setting and finding a place to start.
It has been said that I am very good with timid or beginning students. I hope this true as I hate to see potential lost. In every student there is a special talent or gift to
be unlocked, and I do like keys.
I am looking forward to working with students again, especially in a less formal situation.
