About Julie:

I have almost 20 years of experience of teaching/tutoring students from preschool through 8th grade. I've taught in several different states, as well as online last year.

Originally from the midwest, I have been a southwest transplant for almost ten years. I graduated the University of Missouri, as well as attended graduate courses from Baker University.

After moving, I attended the University of Phoenix and received my endorsement to teach ELL (English Language Learners). This graduate training has helped me in many additional ways. The strategies used for ELL students often can also help with struggling students, or students needing clarity with subject matter, as well.

My style could be best described as providing learners with a comfortable, non-threatening environment while having high expectations and being an expert at explaining things in a meaningful way. I have a variety of resources available immediately to help as needed.

My goal in teaching/tutoring is not only to help the student succeed and master the content, but also to make it meaningful and fun.

More On Julie's Subjects:

  • elementary (k-6th)

For almost twenty years as an elementary certified teacher, I have taught all levels, pre-K through 7th grade. In addition to being state certified, I also hold an endorsement to teach ELL (English Language Learner) students. Not only have I taught these grade levels, I have also conducted training workshops for new teachers, written curriculum programs, taught specialized summer programs and tutored in specialized areas. Last year I privately taught/tutored three children using an online curriculum while traveling extensively with their family. In addition to the awesome places we visited, I was able to gain experience using an online school while offering my students small group/one-on-one instruction. I really felt that it enhanced my teaching and made me realize how important and powerful individualized instruction can be!

  • ESL/ESOL

After taking graduate courses to earn my endorsement of ELL (English Language Learner) teaching, I am now equipped with the knowledge and strategies needed to provide these students. Not only do the strategies help ELL students, they can also benefit the regular student. If a student is struggling with information or a specific concept, I will apply some of the strategies I learned to help. For example, I will build on prior knowledge of the student, provide picture clues or break down the assignments into smaller parts for mastery of the entire goal.

  • phonics

In addition to teaching reading for the bulk of my education career, I was also trained on a variety of programs. Through these programs, I helped to develop my own reading program for children who were learning to read through phonics. My phonics instruction combines providing phonemic awareness through a leveled plan of readers in conjunction with special letter sound cards/pictures, high frequency word recognition, spelling patterns and comprehension. By integrating all these aspects, reading can become meaningful and fun for students.
