About Michael:

Hi! My name is Michael and I just graduated from the University of Southern California (Go Trojans!) after double majoring in Psychology and East Asian Languages and Cultures, with an emphasis in Chinese (I know...it's a mouthful). I've spent the last four years working part time at a local private high school as the assistant coach for both Basketball and Volleyball, so I have a lot of experience working with kids in a teaching environment. In the last two years, I've spent 8 months living in Beijing, studying, working, and traveling. While there, I helped many of my friends study English. I also speak Spanish and some Hebrew. As for why I want to be a tutor, I have two main reasons. First, the practical: I'm a young entrepreneur and need to support myself in a manner that still allows me to develop my own business. Second, the personal reason: I love to learn, but my greatest regret about college is that I didn't have a professor who truly inspired me as a student. As a result, I want to help kids learn in a more enjoyable manner. I believe that learning should be fun and will do my best to make the subject matter come alive. I have found that the best way to learn new material is to make it easier to understand and more exciting for the student.

As for my qualifications, I graduated high school with a weighted GPA of 4.24 and from college with a cumulative GPA of 3.72. I scored a 1490 on the SAT's prior to the change in format. Additionally, I took six AP courses in high school: English Language, English Literature, Chemistry, Calculus AB, Spanish, and Psychology, and scored a 4, 4, 4, 5, 3, and a 5 respectively. Please contact me if I sound like someone who can fulfill your needs. Thanks!

More On Michael's Subjects:

  • basketball

I have been playing and coaching basketball since I was four years old. I played on both school and traveling teams throughout my childhood. I was a three year starter and two year captain on my high school's Varsity team and continued to compete in a more relaxed setting in USC's intramural leagues, where I was the captain of a number of different teams. During my semester studying abroad Beijing University, "the Harvard of China" as it's often called, I coached the international student team which ultimately defeated the official Beijing University team. I have been coaching basketball since I was a high school sophomore, first working at summer camps, before working as an assistant coach at a local high school while attending college.

  • Chinese

I recently graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor's Degree in East Asian Languages & Cultures, emphasizing in Chinese. I have been taking daily Mandarin classes throughout high school and college for the last six years. Additionally, I have spent eight months within the last two years working and studying in Beijing, so I am rather fluent. Now that I have returned, I am still doing consulting work for some Chinese companies. Equally important, Mandarin was not my first language and nobody in my home speaks it, so I understand the difficulties in learning Chinese as a second or even third language, and thus can provide you or your child with a lot of useful insight into how to approach this daunting language.

  • general computer

My father has been in the computer industry for nearly 30 years, and as a result I was first exposed to computers when I was only two years old. This sort of upbringing fueled my interest in computers and technology and I eventually found myself writing for a national PC magazine reviewing and testing consumer electronics. Additionally, I have spent time working for a web consulting company and currently run and maintain a couple of my own websites. Although I am not qualified to tutor anybody seeking to learn software coding, I am more than able to help you better utilize your computer in your daily life. After all, if I can explain to my 88 year old grandfather how an ipod works, I'm fairly certain that I can help you overcome your troubles as well.

  • volleyball

I have been playing Volleyball for 10 years now, including 4 years on my high school's Varsity team. From there, I was recruited to play NCAA Division II Volleyball, but decided to choose my university based on educational criteria rather than where I could play sports. For the last four years, I have worked as an assistant coach at a local private high school. During this time, the team has won four consecutive CIF Southern Section Boys' Volleyball Championships, thus becoming the first team in CIF history to do so.

Student Feedback:

  • Perfect fit

Michael was my first choice, but I had planned to meet with a few other tutors before deciding which one to go with. After the first meeting he was perfect. My son didn't even want to try anyone else. Michael was young enough so that my 13yr felt comfortable talking to him, but still mature so that I felt time was being used wisely. His quiz/test grades went up immediately and more important, his confidence. My son called me at work after a test following his first session with Michael beaming that he had gotten an A and asking me if he could meet with Michael again. Michael was flexible in meeting at different locations within reason and just an all around nice guy.
