My philosophy of teaching is quite simple, Teach those who want to be taught, Teach harder those who don’t.
I believe that a student-center teaching approach, i.e. actively engaging students using hands on activities, is more effective than the traditional teaching approach, i.e. delivering information using lecture.
From my experience as a student and tutor for many years, I found that I as well as my students learned more when we were actively engaged in the subject matter. We’ve all set through the traditional classes where a teacher lectured the whole period and while we took notes, no one asked questions, and when the bell rang, we got up and left. I know most of us not even remembering the topic or discussion. This is not effective learning.
Students who can relate to the subject matter and/or topics, i.e. math to their daily lives are more apt to use and understand it. For example, most of my students disliked fractions and could understand a reason or use for them in their lives. I simply related fractions to sales at the local grocery or department store. Using a few examples of super sales of 75% off vs. 50% off an item already 30% off, I was able to walk them through the process of determining the value to find the best deal. The previous example has made several of my students change their perception of math as they realized it was not as complicated as they once thought, not to mention they can save money by knowing a little math.
As an instructor, I believe I am professionally accountable to engage students to learn using all of the resources provided to me to the best of my ability without discrimination or objectivity of any kind, while following the rules and regulations of the school or my employer. As a student, I believe that the students should be held professionally accountable to actively participate in their learning while following the rules and regulations of the education provider.
