Hi! My name is Holly and I'm eager to work with you as your tutor. I received my B.A. from Boston College in International Studies and Economics, with significant coursework in Spanish. I've been working part-time towards an M.A. from the University of Washington in China Studies. I speak German, Spanish, Mandarin with varying levels of fluency. My passions include languages, traveling, running, international affairs, and volunteering in my community.

I've worked in the private, non-profit, and government sectors and am an avid reader and writer in my personal life. My husband is in the Navy so we relocate frequently, and are new to Virginia!

I don't have significant formal teaching experience, but I worked for a year as an ESL tutor in urban Boston with a diverse immigrant community. I've also provided informal tutoring and essay critiques for high school English students. I generally prefer a hands-on, interactive, and "real-world" tutoring style, creating scenarios similar to those the student would encounter on a daily basis. When studying literature or working on writing skills, I believe a dialogue-driven session is usually most effective in clarifying ideas and streamlining thought processes.

  As a student of several foreign languages and a native English speaker, I understand the mechanics of learning a new language. I also realize that students have different learning styles and it is critical to adapt tutoring to meet specific needs. I've worked as an ESL tutor in the past, and my knowledge of Spanish, German, and Mandarin give me the ability to communicate at a basic level in these languages to clarify misunderstandings. I'd be comfortable working with multiple levels of ESL students, ranging from those learning basic vocabulary to those polishing professional and educational documents for submission to school or career venues.
