Although I've recently accepted a job working as a editor of teacher guides at Scholastic, I worked in special education in New York City from 2005 - 2008. My classroom experience was with fifth through eighth graders, but I provided differentiated instruction for students functioning on pre-primer to high-school reading levels. I taught all major subject areas, and I worked with students with a wide-range of learning, behavioral, and social disabilities.
As the school’s Reading Specialist at Middle School 203, I successfully petitioned for, implemented, and provided training for READ 180, a specialized reading program meant to address deficits in reading comprehension. I also collaborated as part of a team to draft a school-wide literacy curriculum and frequently presented techniques for teaching reading to the humanities department.
As the Learning Specialist at two different college-prep charter schools last year, I served as a Resource Room reading teacher. I addressed reading comprehension, phonics, vocabulary, and writing skills.
I am trained to use the Orton-Gillingham phonics method, specifically using the Preventing Academic Failure curriculum. I am certified to teach both general education and special education. I have a B.A. in Literature from Yale University (2005), and a Masters in Teaching from Pace University (2007).
