I recently graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York with a concentration in Writing and Politics. I focused on creative non-fiction and my professors always deemed me the best writer in each of my classes. I can also tell you the capitals, major cities, industries, shopping meccas, business hubs, etc. of every U.S. state and most countries; in other words, I am a geography whiz. I am a history whiz too. I can rattle off major dates and events in American History like I've lived for five-hundred years.
These skills, however, are not what would make me an excellent tutor. My mother came to the United States from Poland without ever having learned a lick of English. I spent a good portion of my childhood helping her through english classes and the long road to citizenship. Sometimes I had to explain concepts that I myself did not understand. Regardless, our partnership was successful, and she always did well. I know the compassion and patience it takes to work through a problem with someone, as opposed to for them.
