Teaching Approach:
My objective is to teach students that they CAN work through problems. By using their current work as examples, I get a feel of the student's understanding, and then help them follow a logical process toward the answer. As the task is repeated, the student can apply the logic more and more on their own, and gain more confidence not to be intimidated by problems that sound too tough on first reading.
I have loved math and science all my life, so I also try to share some of my enthusiasm for the wonder that is in there with the jargon.
Education and Work Experience:
I graduated in 1973 from the Colorado School of Mines, an engineering school, with a BS in Chemistry. In 1975 I completed a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Colorado. After graduation I took a position at UOP, a supplier to the oil industry headquartered in Des Plaines, IL. I worked there a total of 27 years in a variety of positions, including product development, research, commercial development, business process improvement and quality management. My positions took me all over the world, and I have worked with a wide variety of people and circumstances.
I have tutored GED completion, reading, chemistry, math and algebra, and general science. I taught at a junior college in Chicago.
Current Interests: I am currently an artist, working with glass as a medium. I tutor to help fund my new passion.
