About Andrea:

I am a highly qualified teacher, certified to teach math, science, social studies, and language arts in grades 1-8. I have my Bachelors from The Ohio State University, where I majored in Early Childhood Development and Education (GPA-3.7). I then went on to receive my Masters in Education (GPA-3.95) from The Ohio State University as well--GO BUCKS! I spent three years teaching 5th and 6th grade Social Studies and Language Arts. I have tutored math and reading for students between Kindergarten and 6th grade. I currently am a stay at home mom with my 4-year-old daughter and twin 18-month-old sons. I love children and provide my students with hands on and engaging lessons appropriate for their learning styles. I believe that students construct their own understanding based on previous experiences. It is my job to find out what they already know and proceed from there. The more connections a student can make, the more he/she will truly learn and retain.

More On Andrea's Subjects:

  • elementary (k-6th)

I have my Masters in Education (1-8). I am certified to teach math, science, social studies, and language arts. I have 3 years of teaching experience in social studies and language arts for grades 5th and 6th. I also have tutored in math and reading for students between Kindergarten and 6th grade. While teaching, my team and I integrated our subject matter, so I spent time teaching math or science within the framework of language arts or social studies. I also taught a supplemental reading class in preparation for standardized testing. I integrate subject matter as often as possible. I believe that making connections across subjects can strengthen understanding. My lessons are always engaging and specific to the student’s interests, when appropriate. In order for a student to truly learn, I believe they have to construct their own understanding, with my guidance. As a teacher, making and learning from mistakes is an extremely important concept. I make mistakes and learn from them, as I expect my students to do as well.

  • study skills

Many students do not realize that the ability to study and do well on tests is a skill in itself. There are many strategies for note taking, test preparation, test taking, etc. Many of my own skills I developed and learned as a student and passed on to my own students. I was the valedictorian of my high school class, graduated Summa Cum Laude in my undergrad and my GPA in my Master’s program was 3.95. I believe that study skills can and should be taught, benefiting the student across all subjects. While teaching, I taught a supplemental reading class in preparation for standardized testing. My students were more confident and performed better on the standardized test than they had on previous pre-tests.
