Hello students, my name is Kevin and I've been a guitar and bass teacher for 15 years. In this time, I have had the privilege to teach so many different and amazing types of people, from all over the world, from age 7 to 70.
Although the guitar takes dedication and commitment, (like anything else worth having) I understand that we all want immediate gratification (see "Guitar Hero"). To that end, I have refined my teaching style to the point where I can usually have you playing your favorite songs in just a few short weeks (as long as you practice), so that you will soon be impressing your friends (and/or bothering your neighbors).
Although I received my B.A. in Jazz Improvisation and performance, I've been playing in rock bands since I was 11. A few years ago, I wrote a little book called "Guitar Shortcuts" (currently in revision) that covers a variety of styles; from blues and fingerpicking to folk and world music to alternative rock and surf and beyond!
For beginners, we will usually spend the first lesson covering the basics, but then it's quickly on to learning songs from a playlist or CD that you compile. We will steadily build your repertoire and look for challenges while also having fun (enjoying the process is key), picking up techniques as we go.
For more advanced players, I tend to focus on songwriting, music theory, guitar soloing and improvisation.
In closing then (hope I haven't rambled too much), the guitar and bass are incredible instruments and have brought me immeasurable joy over the years-I hope to transmit some of this joy to you...soon! Thanks.
