About Brenda:

I have 5 years of teaching and tutoring experience. I earned a B.A. in Asian Studies (Chinese/ South Asian art and history, Chinese language) from Bowdoin College and I have been trained as a TESL instructor. I have taught and tutored in a variety of subjects including English language to kindergarten, primary school students and adults in Taiwan, China and Spain, and general education courses for junior high school, high school and college students locally and abroad. I also have experience working with students who have learning disabilities.

While I am confident I can provide instruction in most subjects, my strongest areas are in foreign languages (Spanish, French and Mandarin Chinese, ESL) and social sciences, specifically history (world or American). I am also glad to help students who have difficulties writing or with math (basic, pre-algebra, algebra).

Whatever the subject may be, I try to keep my teaching style flexible in order to adjust to the style of learning that best suits each student.

More On Brenda's Subjects:

  • Chinese

I have studied written (simplified characters) and spoken Mandarin Chinese for four and a half years while at college, but also during my time spent living and working in Beijing, Taipei and Shanghai. My level of written and spoken Chinese is strong enough to tutor students who are at a basic or intermediate level of the language.

  • ESL/ESOL

I have two years of experience teaching ESL. From September 2002 until November 2004 I worked with Hess Educational Organization based in Taipei, Taiwan. There we were trained in various ESL teaching methods aimed at different educational levels and age groups. My experience involves mainly working with kindergarten and primary school students, but I have also had the opportunity to work with adults looking to improve their English level for personal or work-related reasons.
