With undergraduate degrees in English and Political Science, and a Master's Degree in English, I can really relate to students who are working to achieve their dreams. On top of that, I had the opportunity to teach while I was in graduate school. That first experience made me realize that teaching was something I really wanted. 11 years of teaching and tutoring at the collge level, combined with more than 25 years of business and training experience has put me in touch with what the student wants and needs to have in the learning environment.
I am equally comfortable in the classroom and working one-on-one. I don't lecture at people; I discuss topics with them. I involve students in the learning process, making them feel invested in whatever subjects they are learning. I have used this style in both tutoring and classroom learning. I believe that students want something of value from their teachers, and it is my job to give that thing of value either in the form of something learned or an insight gained.
I have been a professional writer since 1982, and have taught and tutored writing and communications beginning in 1984. In my time as a teacher and a tutor, I have covered topics in English grammar, writing, language, and style. I have taught courses in literature, religion, philosophy, history, and even psychology. As a tutor, I have worked with clients in a variety of situations. My students include those who were looking to improve their grades, and those who were preparing for tests (SAT, GRE, CBEST, and more). I have also worked with special needs students and ESL students.
You want someone with experience who can help with what you need to learn. You want someone who can present the information in such a way that you can both understand it and retain it for longer than 15 minutes. I will work with you to help you achieve your goals. I will not talk down to you or try to make you feel bad because you do not know something. If you choose to work with me I will give you a positive and worthwhile experience.
