About Sophia:

I graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 2007 with a degree in Biochemical Sciences. I then spent a year doing research in Japan on a Fulbright Fellowship, and now I am a medical student at UCSF School of Medicine.

Throughout these years I have been teaching and tutoring a wide variety of subjects, including writing, chemistry, Japanese, MCAT (all subjects), SAT I Verbal, and English conversation. I have also had experience helping with application essays and giving college counseling consultations.

I am passionate about good teaching and about all my subjects, and I love to work one-on-one with my students to help them achieve their goals. I am encouraging and engaging and I like to make things fun. I am student-centered and try to tailor my approach to the individual student. I believe firmly in working together with the student to help him or her master the material, rather than simply talking at the student. Finally, I believe that only experience yields improvement and mastery, and practice makes perfect!

More On Sophia's Subjects:

  • Japanese

I started studying Japanese in middle school as a second language, after growing up hearing my grandmother speak it. Through middle school and high school I took it for about 5 years. In college I took more classes in Japanese language and Japanese cultural and historical studies as well. Finally, after I graduated I spent one year independently living , studying, traveling, and doing research on a Fulbright Fellowship in Japan, all completely in Japanese. I have also had experience as a private tutor for middle and high school students in Japanese as well. Having started learning the grammar and structure of the language from the ground up myself, I know exactly what issues are likely to trouble students and how to work through them. So, whether it's help on class you need, or a conversation partner to help your speaking skills, or a crash course in survival Japanese for that upcoming study abroad program, I know how to make your studies relevant and add a flavor of real-life experience to them.

  • MCAT

The MCAT is on every premedical student's list of things to worry about. But, having had formal experience teaching MCAT prep courses before, I can answer all your questions and help you through your worst trouble spots. As a current medical student at UCSF, I can assure you that I myself have successfully leaped the MCAT hurdle. I continue to be knowledgeable about the material and can help train your mind to think the way exam writers want to maximize your score and help you achieve your dream.
