My name is Timothy. I am a recent graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I completed my degree in Chemical-Biological Engineering this past June. I am currently in the midst of taking a year off to do some independent research within some of the MIT laboratories before I go on to my Masters degree, again at MIT.
While I was at MIT, I had the opportunity to rekindle a love I have had for the teaching and mentoring of young children. I am originally from Trinidad and Tobago, and before coming to MIT, I took a year off, in which I functioned as a middle/high school Mathematics and Geography teacher.
At MIT, I spent a portion of summer 2006, working as a camp counselor at the Alumni Association of MIT's Kid-Tech Camp, a program which exposes children from the ages of 6-16 to engaging fundamentals of science and math. The following year (2007), I returned to this very camp as Head Counselor, and this time my responsibilities included the planning of the camp schedule and the development of fun activities which illustrated the presence of Math, Science and technology in everyday situations.
Perhaps my most rewarding experience at MIT came this past summer, when I had the privilege of working with the Engineering Outreach Office's Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program. This is an annual 6 week summer program which targets middle school youth from the surrounding Cambridge/Boston public schools. As a Senior Instructor my responsibilities included the curriculum development and teaching of an intensive Algebra course targeted toward rising 6th graders. In addition, the STEM program operates a mentoring program throughout the academic year. Through this drive, I will be mentoring two of my 6th grades students throughout the upcoming 2008/2009 academic year. I have also been working in various after –school programs around Boston, tutoring in Math and Robotics.
I hope this description provides you with a better sense of my past experience within the education system. I am also a very fun patient, relaxed guy who definitely believes that learning does not need to be a drag to the teacher or student. Feel free to contact me if you need help in any math (or science) related topic. Let’s raise those grades!
Regards,
Tim
