About Richard:

I graduated from the College of Charleston (South Carolina) with a bachelor of science in mathematics degree in May 2007. My studies focused on actuarial science. I also attended the Ohio State University (GO BUCKS !) and Lorain County Community College (near Cleveland, Ohio). My coursework included calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, statistics, and probability. I have always had a love of math, and I try to convey this passion when I help others overcome their math difficulties. I love working on problems and checking my answers. I also try to find other ways of solving problems or ways to verify my work without always looking in the back of the book. I emphasize a limited use of calculators because it is too easy to have a calculator do all the work and thinking. I believe a calculator or computer is a great way to supplement learning. A computer with good graphics is a cool way to see how a graph looks in three dimensions, and a calculator is a an easy way to compute large numbers. However, calculators and computers are merely tools to aid in learning. I believe one has to use a pencil, paper, and a textbook to understand how and why the concept works first. After one masters the skill, then using technology to make things easier is okay. Math is a subject that builds on prior topics. It is a very tough subject to learn without having a good foundation in the basics. I also emphasize doing practice problems in order to apply concepts learned in the classroom or a tutoring session. Above all, I encourage students to ask questions ! The only bad question is the one that is not asked.
