About Ryan:

As a trained music teacher with over 7 years of teaching experience, I can help you in almost any field of music. While still an undergrad, my university paid me to tutor music theory, and I have successfully prepared students for the AP Music Theory exam. I have also enjoyed teaching private lessons in piano, voice, and trumpet for over a decade. In college, I studied the piano and performed two memorized recitals, as well as accompanying for singers and choral groups. I also took a year of collegiate voice lessons, and sang in two collegiate ensembles.

Having grown up in French-speaking West Africa, I am fluent in French, oral and written. I attended French schools in Paris and in francophone Africa, and have spoken the language since I was 5. I scored a perfect score (6) on the AP French language exam, and have also taught French classes in international schools. Most recently, I have served as a French-English interpreter.

Finally, I can help you make sense of Algebra. In high school, I had the highest average in my math classes. I scored a 690 on SAT Math section (old scoring system), and tested out of college math requirements. I have experience as a substitute teacher for Algebra 2.

More On Ryan's Subjects:

  • ear training

I have two years of experience preparing students for the AP Music Theory exam, which involves fairly advanced ear training. I can help you hear and identify intervals, chords, rhythms, and melodies, as well as learn to sight-sing. As a choral teacher and private voice instructor, I have used sight-singing as a fundamental element of learning music. I had a 3.8 GPA in my college music classes, and have taught music for 7 years.

  • general music

I was trained in music education, and have taught music for the past 7 years. My teaching experience has varied from middle school and high school choirs, to elementary music, to general music appreciation, to music theory. My interest in music is very broad, and I can help you understand how music works. My AP Music Theory students have loved learning from me, and have all passed the exam.

  • piano

I have played the piano since the age of 5, and studied it as a music major in college. While there, I performed two memorized recitals, and accompanied for vocalists, instrumentalists, and ensembles. My training and experience has especially helped me to understand the mechanics of piano technique, in order to help students avoid injury from playing. I have been teaching private piano lessons for over a decade, teaching students of all ages.

  • sight singing

As a music major in college, I excelled in my music theory and sight singing classes. I have since taught music for 7 years, including two years of preparing students for the AP Music Theory exam. I have made sight singing a fundamental part of the choirs I have led and the voice lessons I have taught, because I believe that an ability to hear music with understanding is essential to good music-making.

  • trumpet

My love for playing the trumpet began in 5th grade, when I started playing in band. In less than a year, I progressed to a Level 3 playing ability, and won an Outstanding Solo Award from the New York State Solo Music Association. I played trumpet all through high school, lettering multiple times, and was given an award for Most Outstanding High-School student in music. I played trumpet for one year in a collegiate-level band, and then switched to playing the baritone for the remaining three years. Since then, I have played trumpet, baritone, and French horn in community bands, and would love to help you improve on any of these instruments.

  • voice (music)

I began to enjoy singing when I joined the choir in middle school. I went on to sing in high school choir for three years, lettered every year, and winning a Musical Leadership Award in choir. I went on to study music in college, where I sang in the Men's Glee Club and the Concert Chorale. I also took a year of collegiate voice lessons, and studied vocal pedagogy, in order to improve my own singing and prepare to teach others. Since then, I have taught music for 7 years, directing school, church, and community choirs, and teaching private lessons. I love to help individuals discover the natural "instrument" of their voice, and unlock the power of personal musical expression.
