I have been teaching Spanish at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for three years, and I love sharing my knowledge of Spanish, Spanish-speaking culture, and Hispanic literature with my students. During the 2007-2008 school year, I won the Graduate Assistant Teaching Award in the Department of Romance Languages. I am also a member of the AATSP, the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. I am currently finishing my Master's thesis in Spanish literature at UNC, and I received my Bachelor's degree from Murray State University (located in Western Kentucky) with a major in Spanish and a minor in English literature. During my undergraduate coursework, I studied abroad in Segovia, Spain for one semester and Morelia, Mexico for five weeks. Therefore, I have experience with both Peninsular and Latin-American Spanish.
I believe in a communicative approach to teaching Spanish: I speak Spanish as much as possible in class and expect my students to do the same so that their language skills improve quickly. I try to make learning Spanish as relevant and exciting as possible in order to keep my students engaged. As a tutor, we can speak as much Spanish or English as you want. I can offer specific grammar help, or we can have fun conversations in Spanish. Literature study is always an option as well. If you will soon be entering a college language class, I can prepare you for the transition. It is really up to you!
With my English literature background, I can help you with your English class readings, and I can also help you with your writing. I have written extensively throughout both my undergraduate and graduate education, so I could definitely help you improve your own writing. I'm looking forward to working together! Hasta entonces.
