About Patricia:

EXPERIENCED TUTOR -- NORTHERN VA -- FAIRFAX VAAfter retiring from a successful career with the Federal government in Washington, DC, I used my teaching and public speaking skills to begin my second career as a teacher in Northern VA. I have taught at a local learning center for several years, working with students K-12 on core academic subjects and SAT-prep. As the owner of a tutoring business, I have provided exceptional, in-home tutoring, primarily in math and and language arts. In total, I have tutored students 3000+ hours preparing for the SAT, PSAT, or HSPT, both verbal and math sections.I have been fortunate to easily establish a good rapport with my students, regardless of their age. This, in turn, has resulted in my being an effective teacher and mentor. I have worked with all my students to build and maintain good organization and study skills and, most of all, increase their overall self-confidence. I can't imagine a better after-retirement career!

More On Patricia's Subjects:

  • elementary (k-6th)

As a teacher at a local learning center, I am required to work with all students, K-12. Specifically, I teach elementary school students in the core areas focusing on math and the language arts (reading, phonics, and writing). I have privately tutored several students in elementary school level math, through and including pre-algebra. Additionally, I have worked very successfully with several students to prepare them for the VA SOL tests. Regardless of the subject matter, I strive to ensure each student is applying good organization and study skills to both their classroom and home work.

  • phonics

I have worked with many elementary school students in the area of Phonics and, as a result, have an extensive library of resource material at my disposal, e.g., books, flashcards, etc. When working with a new student, I begin with the basics: defining vowels (including dipthongs) and consonants. Students move forward to the special rules for "C" and "G", digraphs, and how to tell when vowels are short, long, or silent. Though there are many "rules", I make Phonics learning FUN!

  • study skills

I have tutored dozens of students privately, at all levels (K through college), in various subject matters. With each student I emphasize the need to build good organization and study skills. Where a student studies is as important as how he studies: I work with the student to set-up a study area with the necessary tools, e.g., pens and pencils, paper, dictionary, etc. Additionally, I have various templates I share with students to assist them in planning their days to ensure their homework assignments are completed on time. I work with the students to monitor these schedules as well as any calendars they need to stay on top of long-term projects. My reference library includes tips on taking notes during class and the best ways to study for tests. (I have MANY resources I use to help students study for PSAT, SAT, and other standardized tests.)
