• bass guitar

  I have been teaching bass for over fifteen years. I teach private bass students, as well as bass players as part of ensembles that I teach in public and private schools. I have performed as a professional bass player in live music venues.

• composition (music)

  I have a Bachelor of Music degree from Berklee College of music in Contemporary Writing and Arranging (completed as part of a dual major program along with my guitar performance major). As part of the requirement for this degree, I studied many styles of contemporary and classical music, and was required to compose and/or arrange music in these styles: Jazz, Rock, Blues, Funk, Traditional (classical), Pop vocal, and others. I also studied composition of Bach style four part choral music at another college before Berklee. My Master of Music degree from Boston University required studies in jazz and pop composition and arranging, blues composition, classical analysis and theory, and vocal composition and arranging.

• ear training

  I have studied ear training at Berklee College of music as part of my music performance degree. I have also studied ear training for an additional five years as part of my advanced improvisation studies with master jazz pedagog Charlie Banacos. I have taught ear training in private lessons for over fifteen years, and as part of a private school summer arts curriculum for five.

• general music

  I am a Massachusetts State Certified Music Teacher with certification in music, instrumental/vocal/general all levels. I teach general music classes in the public schools as a substitute music teacher on a regular basis.

• guitar

  I have a Bachelor of Music degree in Guitar Performance from Berklee College of Music. I have taught private guitar lessons for over fifteen years. I currently teach over fifty guitar students per week. I also teach ensembles including guitar in public an private schools. I have performed professionally as a guitarist in live music venues, as well as on recordings including CD's, advertising jingles, radio and television.

• music history

  I have a Master of Music degree from Boston University. As part of the requirement for that degree, I studied a wide range of subjects relating to music history including twentieth century music history and the origins of current popular music. My undergraduate studies at Berklee College of Music included history of jazz and other forms. As a teacher, I relate information to my students about the connections, similarities and differences between different forms of music from various periods including contemporary and popular music.

• songwriting

  I have been teaching students songwriting techniques including harmonization of melodies, constructing chord progressions, and generating melodies based on given harmonies for over fifteen years. I have been writing music including songs performed in these styles: rock bands, solo singer/songwriter, funk, blues and jazz bands, for over twenty-five years. The courses that I studied while earning my undergraduate and graduate degrees in music helped me to refine the process, and expand the possibilities that I may explore in my own music, and increase the scope of what I am able to bring to my students.
