I home schooled my son for his last four years of school. He started college this Fall at Appalachian State University.
Prior to staying at home with my son, I worked in the criminal justice field as a Police Officer for the City of Charlotte and as a Child Support Enforcement Agent for the State of North Carolina. I have a BS Degree in Criminal Justice.
I have also earned a Graduate Certificate from UNC Charlotte in Technical/Professional Writing and have written and illustrated ten children’s books for Richard C. Owen Publishers. Richard C. Owen is a publisher and developer of professional development materials for literacy education. My books are used for emergent readers.
During the 2000/2001 and 2001/2002 school years, I started and ran a not for profit organization tutoring and mentoring seven at risk children. I had 17 volunteers who gave their time to tutor and mentor the children.
Presently, I am enrolled in the Orton Gillingham Academy where I am learning to tutor children with dyslexia. I will complete this program in mid November after which I will do a 100 hour practicum with The Fletcher School in Charlotte. Upon completion of the practicum I will be certified to teach children with learning disabilities.
