More On Jessica's Subjects:

  • study skills

To whom it may concern: I have elected to teach study skills due to the fact that, throughout my 20 years of schooling, I have consistently received superior grades. I believe this is a direct result of the study skills my parents instilled in me from a very young age. My study habits have enabled me to attend college, hold membership in numerous honors societies and fraternities, and be able to efficiently and productively study various subject matter. Some of the most useful study techniques for me are as follows: 1) Prioritizing time - School has always come first for me, personally. I make sure to study as soon as I return home from school/class. Even if there are no assignments, I will take time after each class to go over the day's notes and reiterate on the main points. Doing this helps me tremendously when it comes time for test day. 2) Time management - Related to prioritizing one's time is time management. This skill entails scheduling one's time in such a way that one is able to gain maximum productivity out of the time they spend studying. For example, I know that math is not my strongest subject, so I will allot more time for that subject than I would a subject I am better in, like psychology. Once I'm in "study mode", I like to allow myself 10 minute breaks for every hour, or a 5 minute break for every 30 minutes. During my break, I'll grab a healthful snack or surf the internet. This frees up my brain and allows me to take a breather from the subject at hand. 3) Organization - It's true we aren't all organizational neat freaks, so many of us have to work at it. Organization makes everything so much easier in the long-run. For me, I make piles on the floor for each subject/class. That way, nothing becomes intermixed and I am able to stay on task with one subject at a time. Also, on my computer desktop, I have separate folders for every class dating from undergrad and currently grad school. This way, if I ever need to refer back to something, I can easily search for it. 4) Preparation - One of the most fruitful ways of studying for me has been to begin studying a week before the day of the test. I'll read over my notes, or even retype my hand-written notes so that the information is refreshed in my brain. I'll do about 30 minutes to an hour each day of just going over the test material until the day of the test. This preparation alleviates me of all the trouble that comes with the infamous "night-before" procrastination. I have several more tips, but these are just some of the most profound. I look forward to sharing these with students in their efforts to become more efficient in their study skills.
