About Ian:

I recently graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in English with a writing emphasis. My lower level English courses and all of my writing courses involved reading and critiquing other students’ works, in order to help improve the quality of subsequent drafts. We focused on structural and grammatical issues, as well as the content of the piece, so in addition to studying literary analysis and how to improve my own writing, a large portion of my undergraduate degree was spent learning how to help others to improve their writing.

I am offering tutoring in English, such as literary analysis, as well as in paper writing and revision of early drafts. I also studied piano from the ages of four to eighteen, and have continued playing on my own since, and can provide lower level tutoring with that as well.

More On Ian's Subjects:

  • piano

I began studying piano at the age of four after completing the Kindermusik program for pre-school children. I continued to take private lessons through high school, stopping when I went off to college. I bought a digital piano so that I could continue playing in my dorm room, and have continued on my own since, both learning to play classical pieces and writing my own. My stylistic experience has consisted of mostly classical pieces, with an emphasis on the Romantic period, though I have also occasionally studied jazz, rock and roll (1950s), and contemporary atonal and ambient pieces. My own writing tends to be more classically influenced, with a focus on dynamic and rhythmic complexity, and more recently chord progressions. I am currently working on learning Beethoven’s Piano Sonata no. 17 in D minor, and Chopin’s Waltz no. 7 in C sharp minor. Though I lack professional instruction at the collegiate level, I feel my experience and skill level should be adequate for tutoring or teaching at a medium level. An audio recording of my playing can be made available upon request.
