Hi! My name is Erika and I have a B.A. from Carleton College with a Major in English. I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.7 (3.8 in my major). Before moving to California, I was a 5th Grade teacher in New Mexico, where I taught all subjects - especially reading comprehension, the writing process, multiplication, and long division. During the past 5 summers, I have worked as a counselor and instructor at the Young Writers Workshop at the University of Virginia, where I specialized in teaching poetry workshops. I have experience (and love) working with elementary-aged students as well as high school students in one-on-one situations or in larger groups. I emphasize creative thinking in my teaching so that my students can become independent, curious, and thoughtful learners. I encourage my students to have fun, set ambitious yet attainable goals, and apply what they're learning to their lives. I currently live in Oakland, but I am willing to travel. I look forward to hearing from you!
