About Melinda:

I am a certified Elementary School educator with experience teaching grades K-6. I love working with children and providing them with the necessary skills for growth and success as students. I can help your child gain confidence in specific subjects and develop a greater understanding of challenging material by working with him or her to determine his or her unique needs, and developing an individually tailored program to help your child reach his or her educational goals. I believe that all students have the potential for success and am willing to work extensively with you and your child's classroom teacher to help determine exactly where your child is struggling and what methods work well to assist in providing the support your child requires. I also have extensive experience teaching swimming and piano. I worked as a backyard swim coordinator at the YMCA and taught swimming and diving lessons for several years. I have played the piano for 18 years and have even taken some of my piano teacher's students upon her retirement. I look forward to working with you and your child!

More On Melinda's Subjects:

  • elementary (k-6th)

I graduated from Maryville University, on the dean's list, with a Batchelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. I have a Missouri Teaching Certificate issued by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education qualifying me to teach grades 1-6 in the state of Missouri. I have also completed several graduate level courses through Maryville and UMSL in Early Childhood Education and the best practices in teaching writing. I am up to date on all the latest teaching methodologies and have had training in the "Investigations" math series. My classroom teaching experience includes time in Kindergarten and 2nd - 6th grade rooms. I have extensive experience with remedial reading instruction and working with special needs children.

  • piano

I began taking traditional piano at the age of 8, and continued to play and take lessons intensively until the age of 18. Since that time, I have continued to advance on my own and have taken classes with master teachers at my college university. Upon my piano teacher's retirement, she asked me to take over for her and teach several of her students. I attended a summer Suzuki Piano workshop, and observed and worked with Master Suzuki teachers while they interacted with a variety of levels of piano students. I have taught children and adults of all ages and continue to play piano on a regular basis.

  • swimming

I began swimming competitively at the age of 7, and continued swimming and diving at a competitive level until I graduated High School. I was captain of my High School Swimming and Diving team, and taught swimming lessons with my High School coach during the summer. I worked at the YMCA as a swimming instructor and was the director in charge of the Backyard Swim Program. I have taught both individual and small group lessons, including several lessons to special needs children. I have worked with adult students and children of all ages and abilities. My teaching experiences range from "Baby and Me" classes to training competitive swimmers to improve their speed and technique for racing.
