About Vanessa:

My name is Vanessa, and I am a French and ESL teacher. I believe that everyone is smart in their own unique way, and that we all have different ways of learning. I also believe in hard work, and trying your best, even if that sometimes means you will not get that A, but it’s still your best work. Sometimes we try really hard, and still do not get there. However, I can help you raise your grade and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of learning. I know that sometimes those subjects we find the most difficult, become our favorites!

I have worked one on one and in small groups with students who need help with their reading and writing in both English and French. I am also very good at organization and I have assisted students with prioritizing long-term projects and homework.

I am a career changer who used to work in both global and domestic advertising, while living in San Francisco, CA. I lived out there for eight years as I also went to business school and got an MBA in International Marketing with French. I decided to become a teacher, when I moved back to NYC, and I went to the one year MA program at NYU’s Steinhardt School and received an MA in teaching French 7-12 and TESOL K-12. I am NYS certified in both these subjects as well.

Last year I filled a maternity leave position as a sixth grade teacher at PS 184 (Shuang Wen), for Humanities and Ancient History, as well as teaching ELA prep. Ancient History has always been a side interest of mine, and I used mythology and stories to enhance the learning experience of my students. I had a strong relationship with my students, and I have remained in touch with some of them. They made great strides while I was with them, and I was so proud of their success and the “go getter” attitude many of them developed in some of their final projects.

I look forward to meeting you and working together!

More On Vanessa's Subjects:

  • elementary (k-6th)

I am NYS certified to teach TESOL K-12, and I have taught kindergarten, second and third grade ESL students during summer school, as well as student taught second grade ESL students. I also have a Dual MA from NYU in French (7-12, NYS certified as well), and TESOL K-12. I believe that I am more than qualified to teach K-6. have also completed one year as an ELA and Ancient History teacher at PS 184 for the sixth grade. In addition, I have taught children since I was in high school, and throughout college, and then had to stop as I was in business for many years. I taught English to French elementary school students while living in Toulouse, France as well.

  • ESL/ESOL

I am qualified to teach ESL, because I have a Dual MA in French and TESOL from New York University, and I am New York State Certified as well. As previously mentioned, I have worked with kindergarten, second and third grade ESL students, and taught a second grade ESL class. In addition, I worked at Shuang Wen (PS 184) a Dual Language Chinese/English school, where I was a sixth grade teacher. Many students had challenges with the ELA as well as English and Social Studies, simply due to the fact they needed more time in an ESL class. I provided them with the help they needed to be successful sixth graders. I have worked closely with students who have language issues, such as reading, and writing which are based upon a below grade reading level. I love working with students one on one, and I always have made myself available to help them in any way possible.I believe, that without the proper support, students who are not grade level in reading and writing will continue to fall behind as the work becomes more difficult.
