  I came up through engineering and finished with a PhD in Optics, and now I build lasers for a career. I like tutoring the more complex math and science since it keeps my knowledge base fresh and it provides the deepest challenge. The marriage of complex math - such as Fourier & Laplace transforms, differential equations, complex numbers, and calculus - to Optics is very tightly bound. For instance, when designing a laser to run efficiently, you have to balance all sorts of linear and nonlinear effects into the simple harmonic oscillator (not so simple anymore!) and decide which terms are "relevant" to your solution. Knowing how to calculate an exact solution to a problem is one thing, but the true understanding of the solution is being able to get a "feel" as to whether your calculation makes sense or not. It's not just the sciences either - complex, predictive models are highly sought on Wall Street to help predict how to MAKE LOTS OF MONEY. Knowing complex math can often make you more valuable as an employee. It's not the reason I chose to learn it and use it, but it sure is awfully tempting :)
