Hello all potential clients of mine! My name's Roger, though I usually go by Rog. I have recently graduated from Williams College with a B.A. in Chemistry. I also wrote an honors thesis in organic chemistry regarding polymer synthesis. I plan on matriculating to medical school, and am currently taking a couple of years off to rest up and to take care of other interests that I won't have time for later. These interests include: obtaining my certification to be a licensed personal trainer, tutoring, taking classes I wasn't able to in college, and learning about alternative medicine. This last interest of mine is probably the most unique, especially for someone who is headed towards his MD. However, I'm interested in all forms of health and wellness; I believe systems like acupuncture, aromatherapy, etc to be important pieces of this overall puzzle. Let me not ramble, though. I am a graduate of Prep for Prep, a nonprofit leadership development program that focuses on taking inner-city students of color and providing them with opportunities to excel, starting from placement into NYC's leading independent schools and on towards, then past, college. I have given back to this program in the form of serving as a tutor and mentor to its students. The age group of these kids is 9-11. In college, I've had experience tutoring students as well. I would say that my tutoring experience spans 5 summers and 2 school years respectively. My focus is in chemistry right now, but I excelled in bio in high school and need it for medical school, so I am well prepared to teach that subject as well. I also took a full year of biochemistry in college, as well as courses in physical chemistry. I am currently taking upper level biology classes which will supplement my knowledge base. My teaching style is multifaceted. Personally, I am a spatial person and need to SEE things to believe them, let alone learn them. I recognize that different students have different ways of learning. Usually I would explain something traditionally (blackboard and chalk), lacing it with metaphors or mnemonics, if applicable. I try to explain things from different angles, then (especially in bio) sketch things out (I'm a pretty decent artist) or provide multimedia aids. I am willing to go through great lengths to get a student to understand something, often times asking him/her to explain things back to me, and quizzing you in person as well as providing you with additional material/quizzes. I have saved every problem set and exam from a lot of my courses and will have lots of pratice problems and examples for you. I've found that regurgitation is not enough a lot of times, so I try to get my students to apply what they learn through using the material to solve more advanced problems they otherwise wouldn't have encountered. I try to be as extensive and thorough in each topic as I can, and I also try to inspire genuine interest in the subject. While not everyone finds science useful for his/her respective futures, the skills needed to perform well in these subjects are the things that apply everywhere in life.
