About Jaryn:

As of Fall 2008, I am going to be a Junior at the University of California, San Diego as a Critical Gender Studies and Political Science double major. After graduation, I hope to participate in Teach for America and attend Law School.

I have been both volunteering and working as a tutor for eight years. I began volunteering at my elementary school and working with students one-on-one. I then began to work with students privately and specialized in writing, study and organizational skills. In high school, I developed, participated in and oversaw a volunteer tutoring program that paired high school students with a local elementary school. And as a senior in high school, I was a mentor and tutor for freshman struggling in the humanities magnet program.

Since I began college, I have volunteered at Gompers Charter Middle School (with which UCSD has a partnership) as a tutor and assistant to the director of the parents' organization. In addition, I have worked as an essay grader for my formal high school. As both a tutor and mentor, I believe in breaking tasks and assignments down into realistic goals so as to give students feelings of control and accomplishment. My writing, study and organizational skills have enabled me to succeed as a college student. I believe that they provide a student of any age a valuable foundation that will help bring future success.

More On Jaryn's Subjects:

  • elementary (k-6th)

Over the years I have worked with children of all ages. Having taken child development courses and having worked as a camp counselor for kindergartners, fourth and fifth graders, I have come to learn the best ways to communicate with them. It is never too early to develop positive study skills or help to foster a student's confidence in all subject areas.

  • study skills

Success in school depends upon a student's study skills. Organization, focus, study methods, planning, motivation and goals are all part of study skills. I have worked with students of all ages on ways to maximize their success. For many years I have worked as a private tutor in study habits. As a senior in high school I was trained to act as a mentor and tutor for struggling freshman, many of whom were working with limited school materials from home. Resources are not as important as a student's habits. Some examples of ways in which students can manage their studying is through the use of a planner, breaking down and scheduling tasks so as to avoid feeling overwhelmed, and the setting of realistic goals. Also critical for a student's success is learning how to read and study productively. It is never too early or too late to learn these skills.
