As of Fall 2008, I am going to be a Junior at the University of California, San Diego as a Critical Gender Studies and Political Science double major. After graduation, I hope to participate in Teach for America and attend Law School.
I have been both volunteering and working as a tutor for eight years. I began volunteering at my elementary school and working with students one-on-one. I then began to work with students privately and specialized in writing, study and organizational skills. In high school, I developed, participated in and oversaw a volunteer tutoring program that paired high school students with a local elementary school. And as a senior in high school, I was a mentor and tutor for freshman struggling in the humanities magnet program.
Since I began college, I have volunteered at Gompers Charter Middle School (with which UCSD has a partnership) as a tutor and assistant to the director of the parents' organization. In addition, I have worked as an essay grader for my formal high school. As both a tutor and mentor, I believe in breaking tasks and assignments down into realistic goals so as to give students feelings of control and accomplishment. My writing, study and organizational skills have enabled me to succeed as a college student. I believe that they provide a student of any age a valuable foundation that will help bring future success.
