Prior to graduation from Colorado State University in December of 2006, I earned college credits for supervised college teaching. I assisted in the implementation of five undergraduate laboratories in biology. They had to learn how to use microscopes, dissection tools and techniques, as well as how to write a proper lab report. It was a class that all majors were required to take. I enjoyed helping non-science majors (that had never had any previous science classes) keep up with the class as well as challenging science majors to go above and beyond. The task was an excellent experience.
During my employment at Maranatha Christian Center, I had to jump in in the fourth quarter of last year and get the student excited about science. I taught Life science, Biology I and II (Anatomy), Chemistry and Physics. I had to try and teach as much as possible as they had unfortunately not done anything with the previous instructor all year. I prepared all of my lesson plans from their texts, prepared quizzes and tests, and prepared labs or demonstrations with what little materials I had. This last school year, I was asked to advise the junior class. We discussed the benefits of going on to college, and their colleges and majors of interest. I assisted them in the beginning stages of scholarship searches and financial aid qualifications. I am ecstatic to say that all of my students will now be going on to some type of degree or certificate program after graduating from high school.
I am very hands-on. My students have marveled at my dive on in approach to dissections and other fun labs. I believe that hands-on applications of what was learned in class is a fun, interesting and complimenting approach. I love getting people excited about science! I have had great success in the past tutoring students of all ages and I look forward to hearing from you.
