I am a Latin teacher who is also doing graduate work in Theology. I was born in Mexico, and have spent much time there, but I grew up in the United States and English is my first language. I speak Spanish and I also lived in Italy for four years and so I know Italian as well. I have studied, taught, and translated Latin for 15 years, and have taken classes in German, Greek and Hebrew.
My undergraduate work included primarily philosophy and theology, but I also took classes in Literature, Math, Science, Music, Language and Astronomy. Study of the Bible was central to my life as a student and teacher of theology and I am presently completing a graduate degree in Theology. I have taught Theology, Ethics, Religion, Latin, Spanish and English Honors at the high school and college levels.
My teaching style is to engage and enthuse the student as much as possible so that they make the subject matter their own; there is no better thing, in my opinion. I studied, have taught, and try to teach using the Socratic method, utilizing discussion to enable students to claim the material for themselves and not leave it something to merely memorize. The application of this to tutoring is this: to engage the student as much as possible and aid them in a process of discovering the central truths dealt with in different subjects. With languages, this includes attempts at speaking the language, clear pronunciation and applications to other languages and linguistic principles present in all languages.
I am a teacher who has often been complimented as having a lot of energy and enthusiasm and I love to help others learn. If I don't think that I can help you, I won't take the job; if I can, then I will help you to do well and even enjoy the subject for which you employ my help. As for recent qualifications, I took the GRE in June of 2008 and scored 710 (99th percentile) in the Verbal section, 6/6 (equivalent to 800) on the analytical essay portion, and a 750/800 on the Math section.
